Torreya taxifolia
near Bloomington, INDIANA

initiated by Doju Layton

INTRODUCTION BY DOJU LAYTON (July 2025):
This planting project involves two main sites in southern Indiana: private land in western Lawrence County and a conserved property owned by Sycamore Land Trust in eastern Monroe County. The seeds successfully stewarded for this project were collected autumn 2022 from the Clinton NC site. They proved to be the most successful batch for me so far.

Some sprouted seeds were planted directly on my private land in Lawrence County before they had sent up shoots. These survived a harsh winter and even a tornado in March 2024, though they remain comparatively small. Others were potted and then transplanted in October 2024 to the Sycamore Land Trust property. Of the 8 seedlings planted there, 6 are currently alive and being monitored, with 4 showing strong growth. These are all mulched and caged.

Additional seed batches from both Clinton and Mount Olive NC have been stored in moist sphagnum inside plastic buckets at the base of a basement stairwell awaiting gemination. Some seed has been free-planted in various locations, though none have been successfully re-observed at this point.
